Black Lives Matter
The paintings below come from 2020 and on when I focused on hiring Black models. I’m also including portraits of prominent African-Americans I painted for Black History Month, a practice I started in 2018 and continued until 2023.
Abstracts
My biggest influence when it comes to abstract work was an art retreat I attended with Nicholas Wilton in 2016. Wilton taught us about taking risks, working in series, sacrificing areas that are good but not great and how to let the painting tell you what it wants.
Portraits and Figures
Selected experiments in figuration and portraiture from 2021-2023
Selected Studies
These paintings are random experiments from the years 2021-2023 when I was exploring landscape and still life. I think they show my fascination with integrating values studies, objectivity and abstraction.
Self Portraits
These self-portraits are all experiments in painting from observation and constraining myself to limited values, meaning I mixed only two to five piles of paint in distinct tones and tried to avoid blending. Joe Morzuch and Catherine Kehoe were big influences.
Brett Formosa -
An Erotic Alter Ego
These are pieces I created under the moniker, Brett Formosa, an alter ego that emerged as I explored more erotic themes in my painting. I found that working under a pseudonym accessed deeper levels of freedom around queer imagery than I could under my given name. Brett continues to have his own life in various online and real life circles, and now I have integrated a lot of my erotic explorations into my main art practice.
